March is Women’s History Month, a time dedicated to celebrating the achievements, contributions, and struggles of women throughout history. It’s a month to reflect on the progress we’ve made and the challenges that still lie ahead. This Women’s History Month, let’s shine a spotlight on the remarkable women who have led the movement against domestic and sexual violence, paving the way for change and empowerment.

For decades, courageous women have been at the forefront of advocating for survivors of domestic and sexual violence, challenging societal norms, and demanding justice and equality. Their tireless efforts have transformed the landscape of support services, legal protections, and public awareness surrounding these issues.

In Merrimack County during the 1970s, three women started the agency after attending a Boston workshop on family violence.  They formed an organization to provide services to survivors since none existed in the area.  The focus at that time was “battered women.”  There was no emergency shelter; those seeking assistance were often housed in volunteer’s homes.

Under the leadership of Nancy Francoeur, the agency grew into a vital resource for survivors. Nancy’s work was characterized by tireless advocacy, unwavering compassion, and a fierce commitment to supporting survivors. Serving as Executive Director of the agency, Nancy dedicated herself to building support for survivors in Merrimack County. Her innovative approach to addressing domestic and sexual violence laid the foundation for the organization’s continued success and impact in the years to come.

Women’s History Month is not only a time to honor the achievements of trailblazers like Nancy Francoeur but also to recognize the importance of their work for nonprofits and organizations that support survivors of violence. Francoeur’s dedication to building support in Merrimack County exemplifies the vital role that local grassroots organizations play in providing essential services and advocating for change at the community level.

As we celebrate Women’s History Month, let’s recommit ourselves to supporting survivors, amplifying their voices, and working towards a world free from violence and oppression. Let’s honor the legacy of trailblazers like Nancy Francoeur by continuing the fight for equality, justice, and safety for all. Together, we can build on their legacy and create a brighter, more equitable future for generations to come.
